Biography
Professor Smith is an expert in international relations and comparative political systems with extensive diplomatic experience. Before his academic career, he served in the State Department and was a senior advisor to three U.S. ambassadors to the United Nations. His research focuses on conflict resolution and democratization processes in post-conflict societies. Professor Smith has conducted fieldwork in over 20 countries and brings these firsthand experiences into his classroom discussions. He directs Columbia's International Conflict Resolution Program, which provides training for diplomats and NGO leaders from around the world. His courses combine theoretical frameworks with case studies and simulation exercises that give students practical insight into global politics.
